Supervision is quoted as the operator states it for its Pesach program — the same kitchens run year-round, but confirm the current hashgacha, and whether catering is full board, for the dates you want. Ask us and we will check, free.

Why the north

Northern Israel is where Israelis take their own holidays, and that tells you most of what you need to know. It is green in a way the rest of the country is not, it is cooler in summer, the distances are short, and it costs less than the coast for a comparable property.

For an observant family it has a further advantage that is easy to take for granted: the kashrut infrastructure is simply there. Hotel catering, bakeries, restaurants and shops operate to a standard that would require research anywhere else in the world, and mehadrin is widely available rather than exceptional.

The four areas

The Kinneret and Tiberias. The centre of gravity for hotels. The lake, the beaches, the hot springs, and the largest concentration of rooms in the region — including the kibbutz hotels on the western shore. The most practical base for a family.

The Upper Galilee — Rosh Pinna, Tzfat, the Hula Valley. Higher, cooler and quieter. Boutique properties and farm estates rather than large hotels, and the best of the countryside. Tzfat is a half-day in itself.

The Golan. Open, high and dramatic. Jeep trips, springs, waterfalls, nature reserves and wineries. Fewer hotels; most visitors stay in the Galilee and come for the day.

The Carmel, Haifa and the Western Galilee. The coastal north — Haifa's hotels on the Carmel ridge, the Bahai gardens, Akko's old city, and the forest and sea country up toward Nahariya. Convenient, and often overlooked.

What to check before booking anywhere in the north

  • The specific hashgacha. Being in Israel is not the same as mehadrin, and kibbutz hotels and boutique properties vary more than the chains do.
  • Shabbat arrangements — lift, keys, meals, and whether there is a minyan on site or a shul within walking distance. In the countryside "within walking distance" can mean something different than it does in Jerusalem.
  • Half board or breakfast only. Many northern hotels include a large breakfast and nothing else, which changes the real cost of a week considerably when the nearest restaurant is a drive away.
  • A car. The north is not a place to be without one. Nearly everything worth seeing is fifteen to forty minutes from everything else, and public transport is not built for it.

Pesach in the north

If the trip is over yom tov, the north is one of the most attractive parts of the Israeli Pesach market — the same countryside, and programs at properties like Nof Ginosar on the Kinneret and Mizpe Hayamim above Rosh Pinna.

Common questions

Where is northern Israel, for a holiday?

In practice it means four overlapping areas: the Lower Galilee and the Kinneret around Tiberias; the Upper Galilee around Rosh Pinna and Tzfat; the Golan Heights to the east; and the Carmel and the coast around Haifa and the Western Galilee. All of it is within a two to two-and-a-half hour drive of Tel Aviv, and most of it within an hour of everything else in the region.

Is it easy to keep kosher on holiday in northern Israel?

Easier than almost anywhere. Most hotels hold rabbanut supervision and mehadrin catering is widely available, as are cholov yisroel and pas yisroel. The practical questions are usually about Shabbat arrangements and about whether a specific kibbutz or boutique property's kitchen is certified to the standard you keep, rather than about whether kosher food exists.

How much does a kosher hotel in the Galilee cost per night?

Roughly $200 to $500 per night for a comparable four or five-star property, which is generally below the equivalent on the Tel Aviv or Herzliya coast. Rates rise sharply around Sukkot, Pesach and in August, when the domestic holiday market and international visitors peak in the same weeks.

When is the best time to visit northern Israel?

March to May and September to November. The Galilee is genuinely green in spring, the weather is comfortable for walking, and prices sit below the peak. July and August are hot and busy; winter is quiet, cheap and can be wet, which around the Kinneret is not the worst trade in the world.

What is there to do in the north with children?

The Kinneret itself for water and beaches, the Hula Valley for birdlife, the Golan for jeep trips, waterfalls and springs, the Banias and Tel Dan nature reserves, and Tzfat for a half day of old city and artists' quarter. It is the part of Israel most oriented toward outdoor family holidays, which is exactly why Israeli families go there.

Are there Pesach programs in northern Israel?

Yes — we list 14, including Nof Ginosar on the Kinneret, Mizpe Hayamim at Rosh Pinna, several Tiberias hotels, Hacienda Forest View in the Western Galilee, Nir Etzion in the Carmel and the Haifa hotels. Those are on the northern Israel Pesach page with the rav hamachshir and a price band on each.

Do you list year-round hotels in northern Israel?

Not yet. Our Israeli inventory today is Pesach programs. For a year-round stay, tell us your dates and what you need through the free quote form and we will come back with properties that match — there is no fee and no obligation, and we are not paid by you at any point.

Galilee or the Golan — what is the difference?

The Galilee is softer country with more hotels, more towns and easier access, centred on Tiberias and the Kinneret. The Golan is higher, more open and more dramatic, with fewer hotels and a bias toward guest houses, wineries and jeep country. Most families base themselves in the Galilee and spend a day or two in the Golan rather than the other way round.
