Why Israel is different from every other destination

Every other destination on this site is a hotel that has been kashered for eight days. Israel is a country where the whole calendar already runs on yom tov — the supermarkets, the buses, the radio, the traffic on Chol Hamoed. Families who have done both usually describe it as the difference between having a Pesach holiday and being somewhere that is having Pesach with you.

That cuts both ways, and it is worth being honest about. If what you want is a quiet resort with excellent food and a pool, Israel over Pesach is busier and more intense than Greece or the Caribbean. If what you want is Chol Hamoed with the country on holiday around you, nothing else comes close.

The main areas, and who each suits

Jerusalem

The largest concentration of programs, and the only place where "walking distance to the Kotel" is genuinely on the table. Expect the highest demand, the earliest sell-outs and the most atmosphere.

Jerusalem hotels are generally not privatized the way an island resort is. You are in a city, and the program occupies the hotel rather than the world. Families who want total exclusivity often prefer the Dead Sea or overseas.

Suits: families for whom being in Jerusalem for yom tov is the point.

The Dead Sea

The classic Israeli resort strip: large full-board hotels, spas, and a climate reliably warm in April when Jerusalem can still be cool. The hotels are big, which makes them workable for multi-generational groups needing many rooms together.

Suits: families wanting a resort holiday without leaving the country, and large family groups.

The coast — Netanya, Herzliya, Tel Aviv

Beach, plus easy access to the centre of the country in every direction. Netanya in particular has a long-established Anglo and French community, which shapes the feel of the programs there.

Suits: families who want to be mobile on Chol Hamoed, and those with relatives in the centre to visit.

The Galilee and Kinneret

Quieter and greener, often at kibbutz-style properties. April in the north is at its best — the hills are still green and the heat has not arrived. The Golan, Tzfat and the Galilee are all on the doorstep.

Suits: families who want space and scenery over a resort strip.

Eilat

Warm early in the season, with the Red Sea and a developed resort strip. The furthest from everywhere else, which is the trade-off — Chol Hamoed trips mean staying local.

Suits: guaranteed heat, diving and a self-contained holiday.

What to check on an Israeli program specifically

  • The hechsher for the program, not the hotel's year-round certification. They are frequently different bodies.
  • Gebrokts. More Israeli programs serve gebrokts than international ones. Filter rather than assume.
  • Second-day yom tov. If you keep two days, ask directly what is arranged: meals, minyan, and whether there is a second seder. Not every Israeli program organises one, because most of their guests do not need it.
  • Whether the hotel is exclusively the program. In Israel it often is not. The atmosphere differs considerably between a full takeover and a program occupying two floors alongside regular guests.
  • Chol Hamoed transport and entry. Israel over Chol Hamoed is genuinely crowded. Organised coaches and pre-booked tickets are worth real money.
  • Which airport and when. Ben Gurion in the days before Pesach is one of the busiest arrival windows of the Israeli year.

Cost, honestly

Israeli programs are the most affordable in the market on the room rate, and that advantage narrows once flights are counted. For a family flying from New York, six peak-season tickets can add more than the gap between an Israeli program and an American one.

Israel is also the deepest market for kosher travel the rest of the year — hotels on the coast and in the north operate year-round with full mehadrin catering. If your dates are flexible, kosher hotels in Israel are frequently a fraction of the price of the same property over yom tov.
