What the north is actually selling
The Israeli Pesach market has two halves. Jerusalem and Tel Aviv sell the city — the Kotel within reach, the atmosphere of chol hamoed in the centre of everything, and a price to match. The north sells the opposite: countryside, a lake, and hotels with enough ground around them that children can be outside all week.
Neither is better. They suit different families, and the honest question is which holiday you actually want.
The areas, and what each is like
The Kinneret and Tiberias. The largest concentration of northern programs. The lake is the point — beaches, water, and hotels along the shore and above the town. Nof Ginosar sits on the western shore at a kibbutz property, and there is a cluster of hotels in Tiberias itself. The most family-oriented part of the region.
The Upper Galilee — Rosh Pinna and around. Higher, cooler, quieter. Fewer and smaller properties, with a bias toward farm estates and boutique hotels rather than large program hotels. Mizpe Hayamim above Rosh Pinna is the best-known of them.
The Carmel and Haifa. The coastal north. Haifa's hotels sit on the Carmel ridge with the bay below, and Nir Etzion is in the Carmel forest nearby. Easier access than the Galilee, and a shorter drive from the airport.
The Western Galilee. Forest and sea country up toward Nahariya and Akko, where Hacienda Forest View runs. The quietest of the four.
What to establish before booking
The northern market is heavily weighted toward hotels that quote on request rather than publishing a rate. That is normal here and not a warning sign, but it does mean the comparison work falls to you. Ask every program for:
- The full rate per adult and per child, all in, including any supplements
- The rav hamachshir by name, and whether he is on site for all eight days
- Gebrokts and kitniyot policy
- Whether the hotel is a full takeover
- What the children's programme is, by age band and by hour, and whether it runs on yom tov as well as chol hamoed
The full list of twelve questions covers the rest.
